Once the English supremacy was established in the Subcontinent, the kings of Travancore seemed to have become quite secure. They had no more fears of any external attacks or that of usurping of power by anyone. The English administration was found to be quite frank, impartial and judicious in all their actions.

This led to the kings of Travancore pumping in money and efforts to improve the quality of their subjects. It is true that they were slowly removing the caste-based restrictions in the social system. This is not an easy thing to do. For, it is like the Indian army cadres. Each level as a very much identifiable dress-codes. Simple by a simply royal proclamation, these things cannot be removed.

For, each level is connected powerfully to powerful verbal codes. Allowing a lower caste individual to use a lower indicant word code on a higher caste man would be equivalent to an Indian ordinary soldier using the ‘Thoo’ / ‘Nee’ (lowest You) to his officer. He would be pulverised by the ‘officers’.

As to the lower-castes, they literally took a mile each time an inch was given.
